Antiquities Authority Warns of Misleading Information Distorting Historical Facts of Iraqi Heritage

The State Board of Antiquities and Heritage confirmed on Friday (May 8, 2026) its continued monitoring of what is published on social media and media interviews with some figures, activists, and content creators, noting that it has detected inaccurate information related to Iraqi cultural heritage.

The authority stated in an official statement that many of these interviews and posts include distortion of historical scientific facts without relying on reliable sources or referring to competent authorities, affirming that the spread of this information has begun to affect Iraq's civilizational heritage and distort the historical memory of both elites and the general public.

The statement called on the public to exercise caution when receiving information from these pages and to verify its accuracy before circulating it, while appreciating everyone's efforts in spreading archaeological culture.

The authority also called on activists and bloggers to cooperate in creating purposeful content that promotes cultural heritage with scientific rigor and credibility, urging media outlets to coordinate with the authority's media department to conduct interviews and programs with specialized scientific and technical figures to ensure the accurate presentation of historical facts.
