The Axios website reported today, Wednesday (May 6, 2026), that the United States and Iran are on the verge of reaching an agreement on a one-page memorandum of understanding to end the conflict.
The site quoted US officials and sources familiar with the negotiations as saying that the White House believes it is close to reaching an agreement with Iran that sets a framework for more detailed nuclear negotiations.
It added that the United States expects Iran to respond to the main points of the potential agreement within 48 hours, noting that no final agreement has been reached yet, but this is the closest point the two sides have reached since the war began.
The draft memorandum is based on a 14-point US plan calling for a cessation of combat operations in the region and the start of a 30-day negotiation period on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian nuclear program, and prospects for lifting US sanctions.
