Calls for Strict Legislation to Combat Misinformation and Rumors in Cyberspace

Warnings are mounting within Iraqi political and security circles regarding the negative impact of misinformation and rumors spreading across social media platforms, which have become a primary source for news and social interaction. Despite the importance of these platforms in knowledge transfer, there are genuine concerns about them becoming tools for destabilizing public order and civil peace. In this context, Ayoub Al-Rubaie, a former member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, highlighted the danger of exploiting cyberspace to incite crises and fabricate information for harmful political and social motives. He called for the urgent enactment of strict legislation to regulate the use of these platforms and hold rumor-mongers accountable, while safeguarding freedom of expression, to protect society from the severe repercussions of digital chaos.
