The issue of protecting archaeological and heritage sites in the capital, Baghdad, tops the agendas of local authorities, aiming to put an end to the significant neglect these cultural landmarks have suffered. Concerned authorities announced the initiation of official measures and coordination with higher government entities to protect important historical sites, such as Tell Mohammed and other archaeological mounds, from obliteration. Many heritage houses and archaeological sites suffer from encroachments, haphazard activities, and the spread of commercial projects nearby, which endangers their historical value. Calls have been made for a comprehensive field survey of all sites to rehabilitate them and highlight them as cultural and tourist landmarks, contributing to their transformation into a prominent economic resource for the capital.
