US President Donald Trump announced on Friday (May 8, 2026) that an agreement has been reached for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine for three days, starting from Saturday.
The agreement includes the suspension of all combat operations along the lines of contact during the truce period, in addition to the exchange of one thousand prisoners from each side, in a step considered one of the largest exchange operations since the outbreak of the war in February 2022.
The Russian-Ukrainian war broke out in February 2022 after Russian forces entered Ukrainian territory, leading to a series of large-scale battles and mutual shelling, with continuous changes in the lines of contact.
The war has resulted in thousands of deaths, the displacement of millions of residents, and extensive damage to infrastructure, while diplomatic efforts remain unable to reach a permanent agreement to stop the fighting.
