Specialized environmental reports have revealed that approximately 4,800 square kilometers of Iraqi territory are contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war, placing Iraq among the most affected countries globally. The reports indicated that the crisis has accumulated over decades of successive wars and significantly worsened during the terrorist groups' control over several provinces. These remnants have caused tens of thousands of casualties and disrupted vast agricultural areas, particularly in the Anbar and Nineveh provinces. Relevant authorities stressed that clearing this contamination requires a period of 10 to 15 years, amid calls to intensify efforts, secure necessary funding, and tighten oversight on clearance operations to ensure areas are genuinely declared safe.
