Subhi Al-Mandalawi, a member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), has highlighted the severe security challenges facing the Kurdistan Region, noting that official statistics place it among the areas most vulnerable to missile and drone strikes, despite its strict adherence to a policy of non-involvement in regional conflicts.
In a press statement, Al-Mandalawi clarified that these attacks reflect the broader complexities of Iraq's security landscape beyond mere material and human losses. He emphasized that the Region has maintained a clear stance of neutrality, refusing to be drawn into any conflicts, including decisively rejecting past requests to allow weapons or opposition forces targeting neighboring countries into its territory.
He further explained that targeting Erbil, the Region's capital and political center, is a direct assault on the Kurdistan Regional Government's efforts to distance itself from regional disputes. This neutral approach, he noted, faces opposition from factions pursuing specific political and security agendas.
Al-Mandalawi pointed out that the perpetrators of these attacks often claim responsibility publicly. However, despite providing detailed information to the federal government regarding the sources of these strikes, there remains a distinct inability to counter these threats, which endanger the entirety of Iraq. He described the Iraqi situation as highly complex, with official authorities striving to shield the country from regional conflicts while other parties attempt to drag it into confrontations.
Consequently, he noted growing calls for the US-led Global Coalition to fulfill its formal agreements with the Iraqi government by providing protection for the Region's civilians and vital infrastructure. Al-Mandalawi stressed the urgent need for practical measures, particularly supplying the Region with advanced air defense systems to repel these attacks—a demand repeatedly voiced by the Region's Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani.
These developments occur amidst a noticeable escalation in strikes on the Kurdistan Region, driven by intersecting regional tensions. This raises mounting questions about the federal government's capacity to enforce security and control outlawed armed groups, underscoring the urgent need to preserve the stability of the country.
