UK Study Warns of High Microplastic Levels in Hot Tea

A scientific study conducted by the University of Birmingham in the UK has revealed potential health risks associated with hot tea consumption due to microplastic contamination. The research, which analyzed 150 types of hot and cold beverages, found that hot tea registered high levels of microplastics, averaging up to 60 particles per liter (approximately 12 to 15 particles per cup).

Experts noted that high temperatures accelerate the release of these particles, particularly from plastic-lined cups and nylon-based tea bags. Researchers recommended using loose-leaf tea or plastic-free paper bags, while advising consumers to avoid plastic-lined takeaway cups. The report also highlighted that tannins in tea can inhibit the absorption of non-heme iron, advising pregnant women and vegetarians to monitor their intake.
